BLOOM TRAINING

PfeiE12a 1440x1615Liz Pfeifer, Philippines

My life seems to revolve around conference calls at the moment: meetings with global IT staff, meetings with IT staff in Asia (which I facilitate), meetings with the Asia language technology team, training sessions, and other conference calls as needed — because connecting face-to-face is not always possible.

Across Asia-Pacific, there is a six-hour time difference that needs to be considered when setting meeting times, and that sometimes means scheduling training at two different times to allow more people to attend.

A lot of my IT support has been related to office software, but over the last few years I’ve desired to connect more with those at the ‘grassroots’ of Bible translation and literacy.

SIL software developers (including Australian John Thomson) created Bloom, a program for easily creating literacy materials. When I heard about the program, I wondered if there was a way I could be involved with supporting its use in Asia. I loved the idea of being creating simple books, then adapting these into multiple languages. God was already planting the seeds in my heart and getting me ready for what He had in mind.

In January 2017, I was asked to assist with a Bloom training session at the SIL Philippines conference. In April, I was asked to consider being part of the SIL Asia Language Technology team with a major focus on building relationships with literacy workers, exploring their needs, and providing training.

In August, I taught a Bloom training session to a group of 20 literacy workers spread throughout Asia. Face-to-face wasn’t possible, but we were able to use a video conferencing tool for the training. Since then, I’ve provided further training in Bloom and other literacy software.

Thank you for your support that enables me to serve in Asia.
